about

“I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have.”

”I Am Sitting In A Room” was a sound experiment composed and performed by Alvin Lucier in 1969. Lucier recorded himself narrating the text above, then played back the recording while re-recording it. The resultant recording was once again played back and re-recorded, the process repeating itself until eventually Lucier’s words became unintelligible, replaced instead by the resonant frequencies of the room itself. Due to the room's particular size and geometry, certain sounds were emphasized while others were attenuated.

This experiment was reperformed by Prize Fuckup on 4-Dec-2021 using two iPhones. Note that Lucier’s original recording was almost 45 minutes long, while these results devolved in under 15 minutes, most likely due to the size of the room and the tiled walls. The B-side remix was then created using digital workstation effects, further emphasizing “voice-as-instrument”.
